Realised OMFS is the best thing since sliced bread? (You’re right!)
Fancy getting involved and helping others to see the light?
If so, then why not consider becoming a JTG representative?
Who are JTG reps?
JTG reps hold the position for one year at a time - although there is no limit to the number of times you can apply or be a rep. This is generally from November to November.
To become a rep (or vote in rep elections), you should also be a member of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BAOMS) – this is free for students, and subsidised for junior trainees, and comes with free ASiT membership and a BJOMS subscription. If you are a junior trainee paying for membership, you can also claim tax back on the cost! (For more info, see the BAOMS website https://www.baoms.org.uk/about/join_baoms.aspx )
To be a University rep, you should be a student at a dental or medical school. You can be at any stage of your OMFS journey, and can be in any year of study; the only requirement is an interest in OMFS!
As a University rep, your role is to be a point of contact for OMFS-related queries from any other students (or prospective students) at your uni. This can be as simple as advice on applying to uni, answering questions about what OMFS is, or pointing people in the right direction to get some OMFS experience. You don’t have to have all the answers, you just have to be willing to help put people on the right track or find the info they’re looking for! Throughout the year, you’ll have the support of your regional rep and the JTG committee if you need it.
If you’re attending a university which doesn’t seem to have a uni rep, please let us know! https://jtgonline.org/contact
To be a regional rep, you can be anybody with an interest in OMFS at any stage of your training, up to speciality training.
As with the university representatives, your main role is to be a point of contact for anyone in your area who’s interested in OMFS. You also should also be in touch with the uni reps in your region, and be willing to help them if they have any queries. You’ll have the support of the JTG committee available to you at all times if you need it!
First, you’ll send us a short bio, email address and photo to add to the JTG website - https://jtgonline.org/jtgreps . This doesn’t need to be an essay, just a few lines about who you are!
Over the course of the year, you will organise 2 JTG events (this can be anything from a webinar, to a careers evening, to a surgical workshop, to OMFS socials), and write 1 update or post for the JTG website.
If you’re a uni rep, you may also be asked to contact your uni medical/dental school on behalf of the JTG. If you’re a regional rep, you may be asked to contact OMFS units in your area on behalf of the JTG.
